Jnana Meditation

Jnana means wisdom. The purpose of this meditation is to get enlightened. The technique adopted here is not to concentrate on an object or sound but to reflect on a series of queries posed by the meditator himself. The nature of the questions are such that he may not be able to find answers for all. However, he is expected to think over them seriously.

No special posture is required and this can also be practised in all places, at any time and in any posture.

The questions generally posed in this meditation are:

  • Who am I?
  • Am I the body?
  • Am I the mind?
  • Am I the body and mind?
  • Where have I come from?
  • What was I before my birth?
  • Who is responsible for my birth?
  • Why was I born in this country?
  • Why not in some other country?
  • What will happen to me tomorrow?
  • Can I predict my future?
  • Can I decide the number of children I should have?
  • How many male?
  • How many female?
  • Is it in my control?
  • How long will I live?
  • Can I avoid death?
  • Can I postpone old age and death?
  • Can I decide my own longevity?
  • What will happen to me after death?
  • Is there any life after death?
  • Will I be born again?
  • How big is this earth?
  • How big is this universe?
  • Is it not a fact that there are innumerable stars and suns in this universe?
  • How big am I in this universe?
  • Am I not just a drop in the ocean?
  • How many were born before me?
  • How many are living in the present?
  • How many will be born in future?
  • Am I not one among the billions and billions of people who inherited this earthl . Still, don't I feel that I am great? Superior? Wonderful? Efficient?
  • Am I not an atom of atoms when compared to the magnitude of this universel?
  • Don't I feel proud of myself?
  • Why should I have such egotism?
  • Is it not good to be humble?
  • Will not humility bring me peace of mind?

Ask as many questions as possible and of all varieties. There is no necessity to have any order in these questions. The more we ask the more we get enlightened on so man) things. When we look at things from the broader perspective of the universe, we are greatly humbled. This will definitely bring us peace of mind.

All problems of humanity at large emerge from the fact that everyone thinks he is superior to others in one way or the another.

This meditation technique will make the meditator more realistic and pragmatic in his approach to the problems of life. This will also pave the way for spiritual awareness,
